Midterm 2 Instructions

Midterm 2 consists of two parts:

  1. Take-Home Data Analysis (Preparation Component)
  2. In-Class Exam (Application Component)

Both components are required.


Part 1: Take-Home Data Analysis

Objective

You will examine and analyze the provided dataset using the statistical methods covered in class. This portion assesses your ability to conduct appropriate analyses and generate correct outputs.

Collaboration Policy

  • You can work together with classmates ONLY FOR THE TAKE-HOME PORTION of the exam (up to 4 people).
  • The in-class exam is in-person and individual.
  • Here is the link to the survey (whether you’ll work in groups or alone)

Each student must fully understand the work and be prepared to independently explain, justify, and interpret their results during the in-class exam.

Use of AI Tools

You do not need to use AI tools for this assignment.

All required code is already available in:

  • Lab assignments

  • Lab slides

  • Investigation assignments

These materials contain everything you need.

You may use AI tools only if you clearly understand the code AI generates.

You are responsible for:

  • Ensuring the code is correct

  • Being able to explain the results during the in-class portion

If you cannot explain your results, it may negatively affect your in-class performance.

Software Guidelines

You will use both R and the applet for this exam.

Use R for:

  • Data visualization
  • Data exploration
  • One-sample t-test (optional — may also use applet)
  • Independent samples t-test (optional — may also use applet)

Use the Applet for:

  • Paired samples t-test

If R is not working on your computer, you may use the applet instead for every item.

Required Analyses

You must complete the following (as applicable to the dataset):

  • Data visualization
  • Data exploration
  • One-sample t-test
  • Independent samples t-test
  • Paired samples t-test

Deliverables (Bring to Class)

Even if you work as a group, each of you must bring:

  • Printed outputs (graphs, tables, test results, etc.)
  • Your R code (if you used R)
  • Any relevant summaries or notes
  • Your interpretations of results

Failure to bring your outputs will significantly limit your ability to complete the in-class portion.


Part 2: In-Class Exam

Objective

During class, you will use your take-home outputs to answer questions.

You will be expected to:

  • Interpret statistical results
  • State hypotheses correctly
  • Explain conclusions in context
  • Justify methodological choices
  • Discuss assumptions and limitations

You must be able to explain the analysis you conducted.

Academic Integrity

Although collaboration is allowed for the take-home portion, each student must fully understand their work. You are responsible for being able to explain your analyses and conclusions independently during the in-class exam.
